About Kongosanmai-in Temple:
- Kongosanmai-in is a temple that was built by Hojo Masako, the mother of Minamoto-no-Sanetomo, the third shogun of the Kamakura shogunate in the 13th century, in memory of her son. It has strong connections with the Kamakura and Muromachi shogunates as a place of Zen training, and many monks studied at this temple. Its two-storied pagoda is the oldest pagoda of the many temples and shrines that exist in Koyasan. It has a broad roof, giving a sense of stability, and is designated a National Treasure as it is one of the very few buildings that passes on the construction style of pagodas from the 13th century. The temple has treasures such as full color Buddhist paintings inside the pagoda.
